One of the world’s great outdoor chefs is heading to the UK for one day only for a very special cooking event this summer!

WHAT IS IT?

If there’s one country which prides itself on its outdoor culinary expertise it’s South Africa, where the braai (BBQ to you and me) is woven into almost every aspect of life. Pretty much every South African will claim the title of the best braai champion in the world.

WHO?

Pete Goffe-Wood! - professional chef, restauranteur, cookbook author and TV chef is a resident judge on Ultimate Braai Master – and he’s heading to Wiltshire, for that one day only to officially open a new outdoor dining experience at one of the county’s most celebrated pubs.

Pete was born in London but grew up in South Africa and has been a professional chef for the past 30 years. He was food editor for GQ magazine for eight years and was a regular contributor to Men’s Health. He is the author of Kitchen Cowboys and Blues Restaurant – the essence of Cape Town and most recently A Life Digested. Oh and have we mentioned, that he was a judge on MasterChef SA?!

WHEN?

On Saturday, July 23rd, Pete will be hosting the launch of the new outdoor dining experience at The Five Bells, Wickham, near Newbury. It will begin at 2 pm before the guests arrive for dinner from 6pm – and of course, the Masterclass ticket includes dinner.

All guests will be treated to a glass or two of fine South African wines and there will be other SA-themed surprises on the day as the ex-pat community comes together to celebrate Pete’s star performance!

It’s the only venue Pete is cooking at in the UK on this trip – having been booked for the event by an old friend from SA as a bit of a special favour.

We asked Pete a couple of questions about a braai and what makes South Africans such experts at cooking over fire – and why Wickham?

Pete said: “Communing to eat around an open fire across cultural and economic borders is very important to all of us in South Africa. The conviviality around the braai is something we can all relate to.

“And because it’s almost always sunny and we can cook outside we think have pretty much perfected this as an art form. We braai all the time. We have braai competitions on TV and I’m lucky enough to be a judge on the top show of its kind on TV – so I get to see the best in the business all the time.

“People might think it’s easy – and in the UK it's often sausages and burgers – but we have a massive range of things we can do over the fire and I can’t wait to help open Duncan’s new outdoor dining experience – especially as I’ll be one of the first people to cook on his specially commissioned braai machine. It looks stunning and shows a real commitment to making outdoor dining a real experience – which is exactly what it is.”

Duncan Jones is the landlord of The Five Bells, and himself an accomplished chef who has even cooked for The Queen!! And it’s Pete’s friendship with another Pete and Duncan that means Wiltshire will host a spectacular braai this July.

July 23rd promises to be a day Wickham will never forget – and there are just 100 tickets available!
